During a webinar presented with Shared Value on 7 December 2021, PMG\u2019s Head of Human Capital and Group Projects, Chris Hitchings, called on businesses to stand up and help \u2013 now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Africa\u2019s gender-based violence statistics are devastating. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aho.org\/news\/gender-based-violence-fact-sheet-south-africa\/#:~:text=Gender%20Based%20Violence%20Fact%20Sheet%3A%20South%20Africa%2051%25,experienced%20violence%20at%20the%20hands%20of%20a%20partner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African Health Organisation<\/a> (AHO), a 2010 Gauteng sample noted 51% of women as saying that they had experienced GBV, with 76% of men saying they had perpetrated it at some point. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During 2019 and 2020, 53 293 sexual offences were reported \u2013 averaging around 146 per day. Many more cases remain unreported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, during 2019\/2020, 2 695 women were murdered \u2013 so, on average, a woman was murdered every three hours. Femicide in South Africa is <strong>five times<\/strong> the global average. The AHO states that South Africa has \u201cthe fourth-highest female interpersonal violence death rate out of the 183 countries listed by the WHO in 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It adds that \u201cat the start of level 3 lockdown, 21 women and children were murdered in two weeks, leading the president to cite \u2018\u2026two devastating epidemics: Covid-19 and GBV\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GBV affects everyone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cI am saddened and ashamed by the data, as we all should be,\u201d Hitchens told the webinar audience. He too compared the GBV crisis with the pandemic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike the Coronavirus, GBV is not someone else\u2019s problem \u2013 it\u2019s our collective problem. It\u2019s not happening out there; it\u2019s happening right here. It\u2019s happening to you, or your colleague, or your sister, or your mom, or maybe your wife or girlfriend. It\u2019s happening in the townships, and in the suburbs. It\u2019s happening across the road, and next door, and maybe \u2013 in your home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Africa\u2019s failure to stem this crisis profoundly affects women, their families, society as a whole, and the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don\u2019t look away<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiekie Barnard, CEO and Founder of the Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) quotes the late Ban Ki Moon, eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations as saying \u201cthere is one universal truth\u2026 violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, and never tolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSadly, in our society we have normalized gender-based violence \u2013 we don\u2019t speak up, we look away, we find it uncomfortable to talk about it,\u201d she says. \u201cUntil it starts affecting us personally, we will do nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because \u201csilence breeds violence\u201d, the Provantage Media Group is contributing R6-million of outdoor advertising inventory to the 2022 GBV campaign, to create further awareness of this critical social issue. They challenge other businesses to do likewise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a critical social issue, and business really needs to get behind it.
